Large Breed Dog Foster to Adopt Program

Breaking Barriers for Large Breed Dogs

Across the country and within our local San Jose and Santa Clara County shelters, large breed dogs face severe placement challenges. Widespread weight restrictions, landlord limitations, and breed discrimination leave many wonderful, loving dogs stuck in shelter kennels for extended periods.

Large dogs often have unique physical, exercise, and behavioral needs that require time, patience, and structured guidance. To break down these barriers and set these dogs up for lifelong success, Silicon Valley Pet Project developed our specialized Large Breed Foster-to-Adopt Program.

This initiative bridges the gap between shelter rescue and permanent adoption by partnering with committed community members who want to make a lasting difference in a large dog’s life.

How the Program Works

Rather than jumping straight into a traditional adoption, our Foster-to-Adopt pathway gives both you and the dog a supported, low-stress trial period to build a bond, establish routines, and ensure a seamless transition into your home.

  • 90-Day Transition Period: The typical foster-to-adopt timeline lasts approximately 90 days. This gives a large breed dog the necessary time to decompress from shelter stress, adjust to home life, and showcase their true personality.

  • 100% Covered Expenses: During the 90-day transition period, SVPP covers all financial costs for the dog. This includes daily essentials like food, crates, and enrichment supplies, as well as comprehensive medical care—from a general wellness exam and necessary follow-up diagnostics to routine preventatives, emergency vet care, and advanced medical treatment if warranted.

  • Dedicated Specialty Care & Support: You are never alone in this process. You will receive hands-on guidance from our Animal Care Lead for medical and physical health needs, alongside customized training and enrichment plans from our Behavior Advisory Team and local dog training partners.

    How to Get Started

If you have a heart for large dogs and are ready to partner with SVPP to save a life, follow these steps to join the program:

1. Submit a Foster Application

Complete our standard online Dog Foster Application and indicate your interest in the Large Breed Foster-to-Adopt program.

2. Match with a Shelter Dog

Work directly with our Animal Care Lead to review local shelter dogs from our partner shelter facilities (San Jose Animal Care Center, TriCity Animal Shelter, and County of Santa Clara Animal Services). Once potential candidates are identified, our team will accompany you and arrange meet-and-greets to help you select a dog whose energy level, size, and personality are a great fit for your home and lifestyle.

3. Follow Custom Care & Behavior Plans

Once your foster dog arrives, you will follow tailored instructions provided by our Animal Care Lead and Behavior Team. This includes maintaining consistent routines, working through training protocols, and attending scheduled check-ins or veterinary appointments.

4. Finalize the Adoption

At the conclusion of the 90-day support period—once the dog has settled in, health protocols are complete, and everyone agrees it is the perfect match—we will officially finalize the adoption! The adoption fee for dogs in this specialized program is $750, which includes full coverage of all medical care, diagnostics, essential supplies throughout the foster period, and a group training class (a $300 value) to ensure your long-term success together.
